Greyfriars Prize

GKT is also taking the opportunity to launch the Greyfriars Prize. This will be an annual event linking Greyfriars Kirkyard with an appropriate student project. The project for this inaugural year involves the students of the School of Landscape Architecture, since this is the anniversary of Sir Patrick Geddes, father of town planning and urban regeneration. There will be a summer exhibition of the work of six finalists during the Edinburgh Festival before the final judging during the weekend of the international conference to be held in Edinburgh around Geddes' birthday on October 2 when the winner will be announced.

Celebration Ceremony
Restoration of the Thomas Bannatyne Tomb

A celebration ceremony took place on April 26 at the Thomas Bannatyne Monument. Lord Cullen of Whitekirk, patron of the Supporters of Greyfriars Kirkyard, unveiled a commemmorative plaque. Guests included city councillors, representatives from Historic Scotland, The Royal Commission of Ancient and Historical Monuments, Edinburgh World Heritage Trust and the Royal Museum of Scotland, as well as from the academic world, the Edinburgh College of Art School of Landscape Architecture, the Centre for Conservation Studies, Napier University School of Photography and Media Art and Edinburgh University Fine Arts Department and Architecture Department. Members of the congregation of Greyfriars Kirk, the team of stone masons who carried out the work and local residents were also on the guest list - as are the only remaining Bannatynes listed in the Edinburgh telephone directory.
